Rule 1

Act boldly today - time is limited!

Whatever it is you want to be moving towards, get started. Don't wait for clarity. It will never come. Acting boldly changes things really fast. Kick off with Rule 1. There will never be a right time. Start now.

Rule 2

Re-write your Rulebook - challenge it hourly

We've all got a Rulebook in our heads. It is bigger than our "assumptions" or "beliefs". Rulebooks are in our culture. They are everywhere. They are in the conventional wisdom that dictates how we act every moment of every day. And we rarely question them. But they are just a fiction.

Rule 3

Head in the direction of where you want to arrive, every day

Have a plan and move towards it every day. Have a sense of purpose. We find people like that inspirational. Identify your purpose and make space every day to cut through the clutter so you can take consistent action towards getting there.

Rule 4

It's all in the mind

Who is writing your story? You or your Tiger? The voice in your head can become paralysing. Realising that the voice in your head is not "real" and need not be abided by enables you to do things you never thought you could.

Rule 5

The tools for Taming Tigers are all around you

This means asking for help and support. It is more than teamwork. It is about being open, being vulnerable, being inter-dependent. And, believe it or not, people will help you... even though the Tiger says they won't.

Rule 6

There is no safety in numbers

Rule 6 says you need to make it happen, stand up for the things you believe in. That's going to mean others will judge you. But sometimes you need to stand alone to do the right thing for you, those you love and the causes you feel are crucially important.

Rule 7

Do something scary every day

This is not about seeing what would happen if you blindfolded yourself and ran towards the edge of a cliff. It is about the little moments when the heartbeat increases and we have the opportunity to do something important, meaningful, difficult... or not. It is about practicing moving outside the comfort zone and discovering the world doesn't end. It helps us grow our ability to do what we want to do, and need to do, without fear.

Rule 8

Understand and control your time to create change

Rule 8 is about seeing time in a totally different way. It is the only scarce resource. This is our one shot. We can't let the Tiger dictate how we invest that time. The only thing that we are using up, depleting and can never replace is our stock of time.

Rule 9

Create disciplines - do the basics brilliantly

There were only 8 Rules before Jim took on the jockey bet. He discovered the last two during that year. There is a lot of drudgery that goes in to making amazing moments. You decide what those disciplines are that are going to take you where you want to get. But when you know what they are, you need to do them every day, brilliantly and without fail.

Rule 10

Never, never give up!

Giving up has consequences. We will have to live with that decision. Are you sure you want to stop what you started? Are you sure you will be OK with that when you are in the nursing home?
